James R. Andrews, M.D.
Doctor James R. Andrews, orthopaedic surgeon,
is one of the founding members of the Alabama
Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center (ASMOC)
and the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI)
in Birmingham, Alabama, located at St. Vincent's
Hospital. He serves as Chairman and Medical
Director of ASMI. Doctor Andrews is also a founding
partner and Medical Director of the Andrews Institute
located in Gulf Breeze, Florida.
Doctor Andrews is internationally known and recognized throughout the world for his scientific and clinic research contributions in knee, shoulder and elbow injuries, and his skill as an orthopaedic surgeon.
Doctor Andrews came to Birmingham in 1986 to help form the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. He has been the mentor for more than 150 orthopaedic/sports medicine fellows and more than 30 primary care sports medicine fellows who have trained under him through the American Sports Medicine Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Involved in education and research in sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery, he has made major presentations on every continent, and has authored numerous scientific articles and books.
Doctor Andrews graduated from Louisiana State University in 1963, where he was Southeastern Conference indoor and outdoor pole vault champion. He completed LSU School of Medicine in 1967, and completed his orthopaedic residency at Tulane Medical School in 1972. He had surgical fellowships in sports medicine at the University of Virginia Medical School in 1972 with Doctor Frank McCue, III, and at the University of Lyon, Lyon, France in 1972 with the late professor Albert Trillat, M.D., who was known as the Father of European Knee Surgery.
Doctor Andrews is a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, and served as Secretary of that Board from May 2004 to May 2005. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Knee Society. He is Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical School, the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the University of Kentucky Medical Center and the University of South Carolina Medical School. He has been awarded a Doctor of Laws Degree from Livingston University, Doctor of Science Degree from Troy State University and a Doctor of Science Degree from Louisiana State University.
At present, Doctor Andrews serves as Co-Medical Director for Intercollegiate Sports at Auburn University. He is Senior Orthopaedic Consultant for Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Alabama. He is the orthopaedic consultant for the athletic teams of Troy University, University of West Alabama, Tuskegee University and Grambling University. Doctor Andrews and his wife, Jenelle, have six children: Andy, Amy, Archie, Ashley, Amber, Abby and three grandchildren.
Yacht racing is one of Doctor Andrews' keen interests. His 50-foot racing sloop, Abracadabra III, won the 1990 International 50-Foot Yacht Association World Cup. He has also won many other yacht racing off shore regattas. His offshore racing sloop Abracadabra was recently named one of the best 100 vessels of the twentieth century by Sail Magazine. He served as President and Chairman of the Board of Aloha Racing Foundation, an America's Cup XXX Syndicate based in Honolulu, Hawaii, which challenged for the 2000 America's Cup contested in Auckland, New Zealand. His other hobbies include golfing and hunting.

Dr. Lawrence J. Lemak
Dr. Lawrence J. Lemak, world renowned orthopaedic
surgeon, is a founding partner of Alabama Sports
Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, one of the nation’s
leading orthopaedic clinics. He has played an integral
role in sports medicine and arthroscopy research
as one of the founders and board members of the
American Sports Medicine Institute, a research and
education center.
Education/Specialty
Dr. Lemak is a graduate of the University of Alabama
at Birmingham Medical School and completed his
orthopaedic residency at University of Pittsburgh.
He specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopy and
reconstruction of the knee, shoulder, hip and elbow.
As a leader in the field of arthroscopy, Dr. Lemak
has published articles in numerous medical journals
and has given presentations in the United States,
England, Europe, Japan and South America.
Since April of 2005 Dr. Lemak has been acting
Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery
and the Sports Medicine and Athletic Related Trauma
(S.M.A.R.T) Institute at the University of South
Florida. In addition, he is a Faculty Member of the
Minimally Invasive Surgery and Computer Assisted
Orthopaedic Surgery Symposium, and a member of
the Innovation Team of Smith+Nephew Orthopaedics.
Sports Medicine
Many professional sports organizations call upon
Dr. Lemak’s expertise as he serves as Medical
Director for Major League Soccer, Professional Golf Association and the Ladies
Professional Golf Association. He is also Team
Physician for many colleges and universities including
Auburn University, Samford University, Birmingham-
Southern College, Alabama State University, Miles
College and the University of Montevallo.
Professional Affiliations
Dr. Lemak’s professional affiliations include the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons,
Arthroscopy Association of North America, and
American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine
among others. Dr. Lemak is also a Clinical Assistant
Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham
and the University of Virginia. In addition, Dr. Lemak
serves as a National Medical Director for Physiotherapy Associates.
American Sports Medicine Institute Fellowship
Program
In an effort to continuously provide the best
healthcare in orthopaedics, American Sports Medicine
Institute and the Alabama Sports Medicine and
Orthopaedic Center developed an internationally
recognized fellowship program. More than 100
physicians and surgeons have studied under the
leadership of Dr. Lemak and his practice.
Making A Difference
As a champion of volunteerism, Dr. Lemak has
accomplished many great things for the state of
Alabama and the Southeast. As the founder and
chairman of the Alabama Sports Foundation, he
helped bring the 1996 Olympic Soccer Games to
Birmingham as well as many other events. Dr. Lemak
also founded the National Center for Sports Safety,
an organization dedicated to sports safety through
education and research, particularly injury prevention
and emergency response skills for youth coaches.
As an expert in sports medicine and safety, Dr.
Lemak serves as a member of the NFL Youth Safety
Development Team.
Civic Involvement
Dr. Lemak has been involved with many other
projects and organizations through his civic duties
including the following: Chair for the Alabama
High School Athletic Association Medical Advisory
Committee; Board of Trustees and Vice Chairman for
the Sports Development Board for the Birmingham
Chamber of Commerce; Board of Trustees for
Alabama State University; Vice Chairman and
Founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute;
Chairman and Founder of Alabama Sports
Foundation; Board Member for the Metropolitan
Development Board; Executive Board Birmingham
Area Council for the Boy Scouts of America; Co-
chairman for the Lung Association Birmingham
Chapter.
In 2004, Dr. Lemak was also appointed as Chairman
of the Alabama Sports Commission by Governor Bob
Riley.

Dr. Lemak’s excellent surgical skills, administrative and business abilities combined with his commitment to the community and civic duties make him an asset to the medical field and to the state of Alabama. Dr. Lemak and his wife have three sons and six grandchildren.
Kevin Wilk, D.P.T.
Kevin Wilk has been a physical therapist,
researcher and educator for more than 20 years.
Kevin is currently Clinical Director for Champion
Sports Medicine ( a Physiotherapy Associates Facility)
in Birmingham, AL. He is also Vice President of
Education for Physiotherapy Associates.
In addition, he is the Director of Rehabilitative Research at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham and is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Dr. Wilk is also the Rehabilitation Consultant for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' Baseball Team. Dr. Wilk received his physical therapy from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL, and his DPT from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of HealthCare Professions in Boston, MA.
Dr. Wilk has published over 110 journal articles, over 60 book chapters and has lectured at over 320 professional and scientific meetings. Dr. Wilk is on the review boards of 6 journals and has received numerous professional awards. In 2004, he received the prestigious Ron Peyton Award for career achievement from the Sports Physical Therapy Section of the APTA. He has also received the James Andrews Award for achievement in the area of Baseball science.
Dr. Wilk has given grand rounds at several medical facilities and has lectured internationally. He has edited 5 textbooks: The Athletes' Shoulder; Rehabilitation of the Injured Athlete (2nd Ed.); Injuries in Baseball; Orthopaedic Rehabilitation(2nd Ed.); and The Orthopaedic Toolbox (2nd Ed.).
He was recently elected as President of the Sports Section of the APTA, and has served as Vice-President, Education Program Chairman and Editor of the Home Study Course for the Sports Physical Therapy Section of the APTA for 7 years. And he has served on numerous committees for the APTA. Dr. Wilk was the first non-physician named to a committee for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
